The issue that I found with this is my brother (who plays french horn) would always get bad scores when submitting a recording of him playing the scale. Each week the scale got increasingly harder by adding a sharp or flat. Each week the students had to do a scale. We used SmartMusic back in Middle School and I have to say it was very successful for most, but not for all. Just some thoughts, but I definitely feel like it's not as suited to our classes as it is to instrumentals. You could do regular part-performing quizzes with your kids by having them record themselves and grading them later. Some of the more common vocal Solo & Ensemble pieces are on there, too, which can be used the same way.įinally, you can actually put your own pieces in (if you have Finale). What it will give your students, though, is independent feedback that's clear, third-party (not you) feedback, which could be a good thing for them to hear. It will give you a general idea, but it's not exactly ideal. You might use the record/grade function to track ensemble (or individual, of course) progress on sight-reading or matching pitch in a vocalise. However, if you don't have access to a number of subscriptions (or the time/inclination to use it that way), you can use it as an ensemble. Most of the time, I think SM is best for individual work. There are definitely sight-reading exercises that can be used as well. I've seen it used mostly for warm-ups and vocalises. SmartMusic (awesome program that allows for self-assessment)Īs you noted, there is a serious dearth of vocal work in the library. The Music Animation Machine - Animations of popular classical songs.
